Want to read more in 2016?

Last week, I got a text from a friend who asked me the following questions about my reading schedule. I love the topic, so I thought I'd share my answers here as well.

Question: Is there a certain time of day you read?

I'm a bit of a crazy person when it comes to my reading schedule. I pretty consistently read for 15 minutes first thing in the morning and 15 minutes just before I fall asleep. Obviously, life happens and I'm not 100% consistent but most of the time, it works.

Other than that, I read when I can. Usually, never more than 10 minutes at a time. It's a great break for me between tasks throughout the day.

Question: Kindle vs. Paperback. What do you prefer?

I've been reading more and more on my Kindle. Mainly because it allows me to read in the dark after my family goes to sleep at night. Also, it is way more convenient when traveling.

Question: How do you mark books?

The Kindle makes it really easy to highlight and take notes. More than anything, I find that sharing what I've just learned is the best way for me to remember. And I don't mean simply clicking the "share" button for Facebook or Twitter. I mean thinking of someone who would be interested in the information i'm reading and calling them or inviting them to coffee.

Discussing a new concept is the best was that I've found to internalize the information and connect with others.

Question: What kind of notes do you take?

I don't take hardly any notes. I highlight. I've found that taking notes ends up being a distraction. Another reason why I like the Kindle. I can go back and just read the highlights from a book and get completely refreshed on the concepts.

Question: Do you read one book at a time or multiple?

I am usually reading 3 books at any given time.
- Business
- Personal / Family / Marriage
- The Bible

I love to ready right after I wake up and right before I go to sleep. But reading business books right before bed is like drinking 30 gallons of coffee and trying to go to sleep. So I try to read business in the am and family/Bible before bed.

Question: How do you decide what to read?

I listen to a lot of podcasts. Some of my favorites are:

Where do I find time to listen to all these podcasts? I listen to podcasts when I'm driving, doing housework, doing yard work, running/exercising and basically any time I'm doing a task that doesn't require a whole lot of focus. I also have an audible.com subscription. That ensures that I will listen to at least 12 books per year.

Other people are another way I get referred to great books. Here are three questions I ask that help me discover new books.

1. What is the best book you read last year? Why?
2. What are you reading now?
3 (My personal favorite): What book have you read that you think I should read?

Question: What are your top 10 favorite books?

  1. How to win friends and influence people - Dale Carnegie
  2. Linchpin - Seth Godin
  3. QBQ - John G. Miller
  4. EntreLeadership - Dave Ramsey
  5. Lincoln on Leadership - Donald Phillips
  6. Rhinoceros Success - Scott Alexander
  7. Redeeming Love - Francene Rivers
  8. Boundaries - Dr. Henry Cloud
  9. The 5 Love Languages - Gary Chapman
  10. David And Goliath - Malcolm Gladwell

Favorite Authors:

I decide what to read based on what is fun and interesting. If I start a book and find myself not wanting to finish it, I don't. Reading should be fun and exciting, not a chore. I have absolutely no guilt in reading three chapters of a book and never picking it up again.

All in all, I read because I enjoy it, It helps me grow personally and it gives me information that I can use to help others grow.
